Since it’s almost Halloween we went with that theme and decided to try the Vampire Cabernet Sauvignon. This was a great, well-balanced Cabernet, with a rich, ripe flavor, including hints of oak. The wine had just enough tanins for a Cab and was excellent with grilled steaks. I actually ordered this on winewoot.com as a package buy along with three other bottles from Vampire Vineyards, but on the vineyard website the cost is $10.99. I gave this wine 4 out of 5 stars.
On the back bottle label is a portion of the poem The Giaour by Lord Bryon. I wasn’t familiar with this poem but researched it and apparently it was first published in 1813 and one of the earliest fictional works on the subject of vampires. I found this quite interesting. The back label reads as follows:
But first, on earth as Vampire sent,
Thy corpse shall from its tomb be rent:
Then ghastly haunt thy native place,
And suck the blood of all thy race;
There from thy daughter, sister, wife,
At midnight drain the stream of life;
Yet loathe the banquet which perforce
Must feed thy livid living corpse:
Thy victims ere they yet expire
Shall know the demon for their sire,
As cursing thee, thou cursing them,
Thy flowers are withered on the stem.
-Lord Byron 1813
WHAT FUN! Keep tasting and Happy Halloween!
